Lung cancer deaths at 20-year high

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), lung cancer has once again confirmed its status as the most lethal tumour in Portugal, with a total of 4,490 deaths recorded in 2023, the highest number since at least 2002. The data show a worrying upward trend, especially among women, whose mortality rate has doubled over the last two decades.
“The continued increase in lung cancer mortality, especially among women, is alarming and requires an urgent response in terms of prevention and screening programmes”, warns the Lung Cancer Study Group (GECP). The GECP argues that it is “imperative to act on two fronts, namely to strengthen education and smoking cessation campaigns; and to implement structured screening programmes aimed at risk groups, such as smokers and ex-smokers over the age of 50”.
