Lung Cancer Study Group

World No Tobacco Day – Porto Channel

To mark World No Tobacco Day, Dr. Paulo Costa, member of the Board of the Lung Cancer Study Group (GECP), was present today at the Open Consultation section of the Porto Canal Informative Morning.

Tobacco kills around 12,000 Portuguese people a day, “a worrying number due to the associated mortality and suffering”, says the radio oncologist. “In addition to lung cancer, which is the disease most associated with smoking, the habit of smoking also causes many other diseases and this number is a reflection of that”, he adds.

The Doctor. Paulo Costa also commented on the issue of early initiation of the habit of smoking, referring that “the new forms of tobacco consumption have been gaining ground in younger age groups, despite being as harmful as conventional tobacco”.

New amendments to the tobacco law and consultations on smoking cessation were also discussed, and on this last topic the specialist makes the appeal that “nowadays people are not alone and there are, both at the hospital level and at the level of the of health, an ability to refer and guide patients to a consultation that will help them to stop smoking”, he concludes.
