Last August 1, the country woke up with the news that the lung cancer screening projects will advance in two regions: at the Santo António local health unit, in Porto, and in the municipality of Cascais.
According to the statement released, the screening is intended for smokers and former fumers aged 55 and 74, who have smoked at least one pack of cigarettes a day for 20 years. Individuals tracked with negative results will be reevaluated annually. Positive cases should be referred to a specialty consultation within 30 days, in order to allow the timely diagnosis of any possible pathology.
The Lung Cancer Study Group (GECP) received this news with great satisfaction, stressing that for the first time a concrete measure is implemented with potential to significantly reduce mortality associated with lung cancer.
