Deco Proteste recently interviewed Prof. Gabriela Fernandes, member of the Board of Directors of the Lung Cancer Study Group (GECP), about lung cancer screening pilot projects.

According to the Pulmonology specialist, these projects represent “an essential step in the fight against lung cancer”, since early detection “significantly increases the chances of a cure and represents a decisive milestone in the control of lung cancer in Portugal”.

Prof. Gabriela Fernandes warns, however, that the success of the programs depends on practical implementation, including the availability of resources and the population’s adherence. It will be necessary to have qualified multidisciplinary teams, in addition to adequate technological infrastructure — imaging equipment, storage and analysis systems, and secure IT platforms that guarantee integration, confidentiality and data sharing.
