Lung Cancer Study Group

Interview Prof. Gabriela Fernandes – First Journal, SIC

World Lung Cancer Day was pointed out on August 1, and SIC was talking to Prof. Gabriela Fernandes, a member of the Drike Cancer Study Group (GECP), about the tracking programs that will start in Cascais and Porto.

“This is one of the tracks that has a greater potential for mortality reduction, which means that we will prevent lung cancer deaths and, in parallel, deaths from other causes,” explained the pneumology expert.

During the interview, Prof. Gabriela Fernandes warned of the high rate of late diagnoses, stressing that “about 60% of cases are detected in advanced phases of the disease.” However, it reinforced the importance of early diagnosis. “If we can identify the disease at an early stage, this scenario may change significantly,” he concludes.
