World Tobacco Day was created by WHO Member States in 1987 and is celebrated each year on May 31. The purpose of the date is to raise awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco exposure in any of its forms .
This year’s campaign focuses on younger generations, and aims to deconstruct myths and expose dishonest tactics used by the tobacco industry. By providing young people with the knowledge necessary to easily detect the industry’s manipulation strategies, it intends to enable them to oppose these.
Some of the strategies revealed by WHO are:
– Attractive flavors for young people in smokeless tobacco products and electronic cigarettes.
– Promotion and distribution of free samples at popular events for young people.
– Advertising and product placement in films and TV shows and through social media platforms with paid influencers.
With this campaign, WHO calls on all young people to participate in the struggle and become a tobacco-free generation.
The WHO also highlights the special importance of commemorating this date in the current moment of the coronavirus pandemic, since scientific evidence shows that smokers are at a greater risk of developing serious COVID-19 disease.
