Lung Cancer Study Group

OPINION ARTICLE BY DR. DANIELA MADAMA – NEWS JOURNAL

Dr. Daniela Madama, a member of the Scientific Committee of the Lung Cancer Study Group (GECP), authored an exclusive opinion piece, published in the Jornal de Notícias, dedicated to the issue of lung cancer.

The pulmonologist reflects on the evolution of the disease, emphasizing that it “can no longer be seen merely as an avoidable consequence of smoking,” since the patient profile has changed. “There is an increase in the number of women diagnosed, the identification of cases at younger ages and in people who have never smoked, while still maintaining a high percentage of late diagnoses, often made incidentally and in the absence of specific symptoms,” she explains.

In the article, Dr. Daniela Madama also highlights the significant advances made in recent years, noting that the emergence of “new tools has revolutionized the way we monitor and understand lung cancer.” Innovative therapies have also transformed the prognosis of many patients, enabling “longer survival and a quality of life previously unthinkable.” Finally, the expert highlights the importance of implementing screening programs, “a strategy that, in other countries, has already allowed for a reduction in mortality of more than 20%”.
