The “Round Table: Advanced Stages” discussed the best therapeutic approaches for treating advanced stages of lung cancer. Dr. Ulisses Brito, moderator of the session, highlighted some of the advances recorded in recent years.
“5/10 years ago, the average life expectancy of stage IV patients was 10/15% at most and, at the moment, we already have clinical trials with a 5-year assessment of stage IV patients who have a 5-year survival rate of around 22/25%”, highlights the specialist. He adds that “20 years ago we only had chemotherapy without specific objectives and, now, we have therapies aimed at improving the response, quality of life and survival of patients”.
Regarding the most promising therapies, the specialist highlights “chemotherapy and immunotherapy”, but also mentions the existence of “drugs that are beginning to be investigated with new molecules and new markers that are still in the research phase, which have not yet been introduced into the markets and, therefore, we cannot yet comment on them”.
